While we fully agree with Alan Greenspan that there are three types of Economist - those who can count and those who can't; it is undoubtedly economic surplus that has allowed us to move beyond the subsistence living of our ancestors and given us the space to create our ever-evolving world.

 

This has led us to the point where today we must confront a challenging dichotomy.


In the digital marketplace we have moved from the economics of scarcity to the economics of abundance.
Yet demand for many commodities has never been greater due to an ever-increasing demand from a world bouyed on this rising tide.

 

Equally, in the digital arena, the economics of supply are being rewritten as the boundaries of consumption and production blur, as geographical separation fades in a distanceless world and new models of wealth creation are created with ever-increasing frequency.
Yet in many, more traditional industries, supply struggles to keep pace with demand as stocks of core materials come under greater pressure, energy supply becomes expensive and risky and emerging markets mushroom around the world.
